I came to it a little late after the initial international stampede, but was rewarded with many riches in doing so. :)

But this last couple of years, it's all pretty much taken a really bland downward shift much akin to the depths of mediocrity that HK cinema has sunken to. I don't want to point fingers, but I think the FTA with the US was an integral cog in what we've seen in recent times. Even Kim Ki-Duk, when I interviewed him for a US magazine, agreed that the changes in the screen quota had created a downturn in general quality.

Who knows? Maybe they'll all start getting back on track in the next couple of years? One can but only hope! In the interim I think I've become far more selective about what I watch and from where than ever before; been burned far too many times of late... :(Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28108120.post-38810298828332723482008-05-30T23:09:00.000-05:002008-05-30T23:09:00.000-05:00Naw - we never learn! We thought the hard part would be getting Angela to attend - not to find decent prints of 2 of her better films.Brian Naashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12798896753133473887noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28108120.post-30586373541011530312008-05-29T16:04:00.000-05:002008-05-29T16:04:00.000-05:00I'm guessing you guys will need an extra screening...I'm guessing you guys will need an extra screening of "Fine, Totally Fine". After reading your reviews, I'm pretty stoke to see it too.

It's too bad about Angela Mao. I guess that'll teach you to preannounce things before they are confirmed. :-) j/k

Actually, I rather like it when you talk about some of these behind the scene stuff about the festival.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28108120.post-814766849493368572008-05-27T16:26:00.000-05:002008-05-27T16:26:00.000-05:00Fine Totally Fine is my prediction for the Audienc...Fine Totally Fine is my prediction for the Audience Award Winner this year - it is so funny in a really good natured sweet way.

I am afraid the Angela Mao thing fell apart. We just couldn't locate any prints of her classic films and we tried tons of places. Its really a shame as she had agreed to come. One might have assumed that Fortune Star had prints since they have been releasing her dvds and vcds but not according to them.

We should hopefully have some other films to announce next week but our selection process has come to a standstill while everyone was at Cannes (not us, them!).Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28108120.post-20520986212728451442008-05-26T22:52:00.000-05:002008-05-26T22:52:00.000-05:00Regardless of what happens with Funuke and the Lov...Regardless of what happens with Funuke and the Love on Sunday movies you've got a very solid line-up of Asian movies! I'm excited about all the Japanese films and in particular Fine, Totally Fine. I've been wanting to watch it since seeing the movie poster in Osaka back in early January. I'm also shocked that you guys were able to get Yasukuni!

Is the Angela Mao event still in the works?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28108120.post-16039132512169466012008-05-23T18:17:00.000-05:002008-05-23T18:17:00.000-05:00Re: Funuke - yes it is - I saw it a while back and...Re: Funuke - yes it is - I saw it a while back and really liked it a lot. We have actually been trying to contact the distributor to see if it is available and at what price but so far they have ignored us! But we did add Happiness to the schedule last night and it was one of the K-films that I liked a fair amount - from the director of Christmas in August.

As to the Love on Sunday films - no we haven't included them yet but the program isn't complete so I am still hoping and Your Friends is apparently unavailable to us.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28108120.post-86006755448988210062008-05-17T00:34:00.000-05:002008-05-17T00:34:00.000-05:00Wait, so I don't get it. Grady lamented pretty much the same on his blogs.

I wonder if Korea will be following Hong Kong's pattern of going from a hub of creative cinematic excellence to becoming a factory for producing sugary and pretty (and perhaps surgery enhanced), but questionably talented pop idols.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
