B&W Stills of HK Actors from the 1960's and 1970's

I came across a book in Hong Kong that is filled with a number of black and white photos of Hong Kong actors from the 1960's and 70's. Each actor normally gets 2-3 pictures. The book is in Chinese and so unfortunately I could not read the small amount of text or the actors name. As best as I could, I identified many of them, but for quite a few I didn't have a clue though often they looked familiar. I have no idea what the criteria for inclusion was - many famous stars are not here while a number of "B" actors are - but most seem to be from the Shaw Brothers - though Bruce Lee is also in there. Anyway, I enjoy old black and white stills and thought some of you might as well so I scanned them and put them up. If you are able to ID some of the ones I could not, please feel free to let me know because it bugs me when I can't figure out who someone is.

Here is the link - 8 pages of photos for your viewing pleasure.

Brian --

Have you thought of scanning the names of the actors you want us to identify since even someone like me can identify the Chinese characters for certain surnames (like, you know, Lam/Lin, Yeoh/Yeung/Yang, Cheung, Chan, Lee, Wong, Chow, etc.) these days? ;b

Anyways, based on photos alone:-

#8 is most definitely Lau Wing (best known for his portrayal of Emperor Chien Lung in the Shaw Brothers series/movies about that emperor).

#6 is an actor whose name currently escapes me but if it helps, I've seen him in many kung fu movies.

#23 -- I'm not sure whether the singer Agnes Chan ever appeared in any movies but the young woman in the photos sure do remind me of her!

Unidentified male actors:
#4 = Chen Sing, frequent kung fu heavy
#6 = Wang Chung, star of THE DELINQUENTS (aka STREET GANGS OF HONG KONG) and supporting actor in many Shaw Bros. martial arts films.
#7 = Wang Yu, not to be confused with Jimmy Wang Yu. This Wang Yu was a protege of Lau Kar Leung and appeared in several of his films, including THE 36TH CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN and DIRTY HO, in which he played the title character opposite Gordon Liu.

Thanks for your great website, Brian. Whenever I run into a HK entertainment personality that is new to me, I check out your actor biographies and often find information that helps me place him/her in some perspective. I have also enjoyed your recent blog and am so jealous of your Asian trip. Next time, please take me along.

I may be mistaken, but is #11 perhaps Yolinda Yan? I'm not sure, but there is certainly a strong resemblance.

Thanks so much for everyone's help. I am kind of embarrassed that I didn't get Chan Ping who I like so much and Danny Lee who I have seen so often - but people look a little different in black and white. At least that is my excuse! Never even heard of Agnes Chan or Pan Ying-zi I have to admit.

Oh - sorry that wan't Yolanda Yan - I am able to check their name in the HKMDB if I have a reference.

Still lots of ones not ID'ed yet.

Wow! Terence - I can't thank you enough for taking the time to not only ID all of these but for providing some interesting info as well. Some of these actors seem fairly obscure so I am really amazed that you got them.

There are now only 2 left so they must be really obscure - so I scanned in the entire page with text here.

Regarding the 2 identified stars left, the actor is Chin Chuan and the actress is Wang Ling which I have already identified. She starred in some swordplay films. By the way, Chiang Ching is not also known as Chiang Nan. After leaving Shaws, Chiang Ching went on to star in her most impressive film about one of the 4 beauties of China - Shih Szi.
